Pay No Attention to the Price
Seems to be the mantra of today's shoppers. Mika showed me an article in Better Homes & Gardens (I think) that said that you should never pay full price, everything is negotiable, and basically that retailers are making huge profits. I need to talk with the retailers they are talking about. Another example of this is the Direct Buy commercials that my favorite talk show host Laura Ingraham touts in which she says that retailers are making huge profits and that to get a fair shake you should Direct Buy.
Along with the internet - see my earlier posts - it is difficult indeed to be a bricks and mortar retailer anymore. At the end of the day after product costs, overhead, payroll, utilities, advertising, etc. we hope to make literally pennies on the dollar. Everytime someone asks for a discount it not only cuts into our profits but adds to our deficit. But, consumers are being indoctrinated that it is their right to receive a discount and turn in a hoff if they don't get one. To be fair, so far it is a minority, but we're definitely seeing more and more.
Give us a break (I'm not going to give you the "we have three kids to get through college", deal . . but, . . . we do), we are not ripping you off but trying to run the best stores with a wonderful shopping experience and prices that are competitive.
